2010 NOMA STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

AgriCultural Center:
Rethinking community through arts and agricultural production.

This design competition is a call for ideas that will optimize the renovation of an existing community center and community garden, extending social and cultural services to the local community and youth, in particular. The competition seeks solutions which rethink the notion of community through “the harvest” as a process of artistic and agricultural production. Additionally, the designs should clearly demonstrate how interior functions relate spatially and programmatically to the exterior landscape.

In addition to the 4,020 sf site of the existing building, design teams may consider the acquisition of the 1,730 sf and 5,000 sf parcels directly adjacent to the primary site. One or both parcels may be considered.

The building footprint is to be determined by the design team and conform to zoning (see the zoning maps and zoning rules). A minimum of 75% of the shell of the build must be retained. The following program is to be used by all design teams; each design team may add to the program but must remain within the established budget:

Building Program:

– Primary Meeting Hall to be used as a Formal Performance Space (100 people unfixed seating)
– Stage (maximum of 15 people)
– Secondary Meeting Hall (40 people un-concentrated space)
– (4) Offices
– (2) Music practice spaces
– Retail store/area
– Kitchen (4 people)
– Female Restrooms
– Male Restrooms
– (3) Classrooms for 20 people
– Greenhouse lab/classroom minimum of 1,500 sf
– Covered market/exterior event space
– Indoor Storage
– HVAC Space
– Community Gardens (maintain and/or expand the number of plots)
