FACULTY POSITION POSTING FORM
Rochester Institute of Technology
College of Imaging Arts and Science and Golisano Institute for Sustainability
BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:
Job Title/ Rank: Program Chair - Architecture
PC# 9700 IRC40774
Job Category: Faculty, Tenure Track
Starting Date: December 2010
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, in partnership with Golisano Institute for Sustainability, is actively seeking highly qualified candidates for Program Chair of the anticipated Master of Architecture program that will begin admitting students in Fall 2011.
The design of this program has been thoroughly shaped by today’s most urgent imperatives. Chief among these is the sustainability imperative. This program is founded upon the principle that the adjective “sustainable” is always the implicit modifier of the noun “architecture.” Every required course will be presented and experienced through the lens of sustainability. Students will also be exposed to the results of cutting-edge research in such areas as material aging, clean technologies, alternative energy solutions, pollution prevention, and green product assessment.
The character of the proposed M. Architecture program is further defined by two additional intertwined aspects: urbanism, and integrated practice. Since the urban fabric of many cities is essentially pre-determined, the program will foreground the practices and principles of sustainable preservation and adaptive reuse. The City of Rochester – as well as other U.S. and international cities where our students will work and study – will serve as living classrooms.
From the beginning, students will approach design problems within teams, as is the norm in today’s integrated practices. Integrated Building Systems courses will integrate all technical knowledge commonly segregated into various courses – structures; building materials and methods of construction; building codes and standards; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; cost analysis; and site work.
This program is designed for students holding a baccalaureate degree in any field and will prepare students for the practice of architecture in an increasingly inter-disciplinary and inter-professional world. Students will be prepared for state licensure in this highly applied and collaborative program.
Reporting jointly to the Dean, College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, and the Director, Golisano Institute for sustainability, the program chair will have strategic and implementation responsibilities for this exciting new university initiative, including curriculum implementation and continuous improvement, student recruiting, faculty hiring, and program administration, in addition to teaching responsibilities.
