ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING & ZONING

Two Positions Available

PRINCIPAL PLANNER - Neighborhood Planning & Community Development Division

GS Grade 24, $62,592.02 - $103,569.44

Duties:  The Principal Planner for the Neighborhood Planning and Community Development Division will lead a team responsible for creating a variety of master plans and planning and implementation studies. The selected candidate will have a history of negotiating successfully with the community, developers and public officials for the highest quality of urban planning. Expertise in urban design, real estate development, environment, or transportation is a plus.  Other important attributes for this position include excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, good analytical skills, including a strong understanding of design principles, the ability to handle multiple projects efficiently, the ability to work directly with the public and decision makers, and the desire to work in a diverse setting.

Minimum Requirements:  Five years or more of progressively responsible experience in urban planning, management of large-scale urban development projects and complex planning studies, and completion of college level courses in Urban Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or related field.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Candidates with comprehensive planning experience and/or expertise in one or more of the following: urban design and architecture, sustainable development, real estate economics, and transportation.  More than five years experience in organizing, reviewing and managing team efforts involving multiple skills and perspectives. Experience managing and coordinating large development cases and complex planning projects. Experience presenting to Boards, Commissions and community groups.  Strong communications, writing, organizational and analytical skills.  Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or related field.

 

DEPUTY DIRECTOR – LAND USE AND ADMINISTRATION DIVISIONS

GS GRADE 27, $72,253.86 - $119,556.66

 

Duties:  This position requires independent professional judgment to assist the Director with Land Use and Administration issues.  This position provides oversight and management of Land Use Services (Zoning and Historic Preservation) and Administration Divisions, including Planning Commission staff, the CIP and Operating Budgets for the Department, special projects involving policy and/or land use issues (Green Buildings for example), works with the City Attorney on land use issues, manages Special Use Permits (SUP) and supervises the SUP planners, and has primary responsibility for responding to Council and citizen requests.

 

Minimum Requirements:  At least five years of experience in the field of city planning at the level of Urban Planner III, including some supervisory or project leader experience and considerable experience writing, analyzing and administering zoning ordinances; and completion of college level courses in urban planning, public administration, urban economics, landscape architecture or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Preferred Qualifications: An advanced degree in planning, law, or a related field; three years of experience at a Principal Planner or Division Chief level; minimum of five years experience working with Land Use and related legal issues for local government; strong analytical, written and oral communications skills; extensive project management and staff management experience; and superior public presentation skills.

Planner CL2 (29UC4150)

 

The University of Cincinnati is currently accepting applications for a Planner CL2  to perform architectural planning related tasks for projects under the direction of the Associate Vice President/University Architect, and Senior Planner. Assist in developing and implementing projects that combine the University's Master Plan and UC|21 Academic Plan principles, academic needs and Capital budget. Work with user groups to develop programs for new and remodeled facilities and related infrastructures. Develop long-range plans for use of academic/administrative space. Propose creative strategies that assist in implementing the mission of the Office of Planning + Design + Construction. Manage multiple projects concurrently. Conduct presentations utilizing mechanical and electronic graphic applications. Use computer applications to perform quantitative numerical, graphic, and other analysis.

 

Min. Quals.: Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Urban Planning or related field; Masters Degree preferred; 5 years relevant experience in master planning, programming, cost estimating and schematic design. Architectural registration is desired.
